Supplements are everywhere, but most are best avoided. These are the most rigorously tested options worth considering in your own stack.

The [lon-jev-i-tee]nounLiving a long life; influenced by genetics, environment, and lifestyle.Learn More: Longevity supplement world has become a bit of a frontier town. Every month brings a new molecule, a viral protocol, and a price tag to match, most of it backed by mouse data and a founder’s enthusiasm. We follow that research closely, and some of it may pan out. But there’s a category that never makes the headlines because it isn’t new: the ordinary vitamins and minerals that have been through the trials the trendy ones haven’t. Tens of thousands of people. Years of follow-up. Outcomes you can measure, like heart attacks and brain scans. None of these will reverse your biological age, but they will increase your [helth-span]nounThe number of years you live in good health, free from chronic illness or disability.Learn More: Healthspan by supporting the systems that matter (your heart, your nervous system, your immune response, your brain) so they keep working the way you want them to, for a long time. Boring, yes. Also the ones we’d actually restock.

The Healthspan Supplement Stack

1) B Complex: For Cellular Energy and Brain Protection

B vitamins are the cofactors your cells use to turn food into energy and to keep homocysteine, an amino acid tied to brain shrinkage, in check. In the Oxford VITACOG trial, older adults with mild memory concerns who took high-dose B6, B12, and folic acid for two years had a 30 percent slower rate of brain atrophy than the placebo group, and a 53 percent slower rate among those who started with the highest homocysteine.

2) Vitamin C: For a Faster Immune Bounce-Back

Vitamin C won’t stop you from catching a cold, and the research is refreshingly clear on that. What it does is shorten the ones you get: a Cochrane review of 29 trials and more than 11,000 people found regular daily vitamin C reduced cold duration by 8 percent in adults and 14 percent in children, and cut cold risk in half among people under heavy physical stress like marathoners and soldiers.

3) Ashwagandha: For a Steadier Stress Response

Ashwagandha is an [uh-dap-tuh-juhn]nounHerbs or compounds that help the body resist stress.Learn More: Adaptogen, which means it’s studied for helping the body’s stress system return to baseline rather than sedating it. A meta-analysis of 12 randomized trials with 1,002 people found meaningful reductions in both stress and anxiety compared with placebo, with the sweet spot for stress landing around 300 to 600 mg a day. A separate 2024 analysis of nine trials found it also lowered serum cortisol, the hormone that stays elevated when your days won’t let up.

4) Magnesium Glycinate: For Muscle, Heart, Nerve, and Sleep

Magnesium runs more than 300 enzyme reactions in the body, including the ones that let muscles relax, nerves fire cleanly, and your heart keep its rhythm. A meta-analysis of 34 double-blind trials found that around 370 mg a day for three months lowered systolic blood pressure by 2 mm Hg and diastolic by nearly 2, a modest shift that matters across decades. In older adults with insomnia, pooled trial data showed magnesium helped people fall asleep about 17 minutes faster than placebo.

5) Fish Oil: For Your Heartspan

Omega-3s have had a complicated decade in the headlines, so here’s what the biggest trial actually found. In VITAL, a five-year NIH-funded study of nearly 26,000 U.S. adults, 1 gram of fish oil a day did not reduce the combined rate of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death, but it did cut heart attacks by 28 percent and fatal heart attacks by half, with the strongest signal in people who rarely ate fish. A Harvard meta-analysis of 13 trials and 127,477 people confirmed the pattern: small but real reductions in heart attack, coronary death, and cardiovascular death, with benefit rising alongside dose.

6) CoQ10: For Your Heart’s Energy Supply

Coenzyme Q10 is what your [mahy-tuh-kon-dree-uh]nounOrganelles in cells responsible for producing energy (ATP), often called the powerhouse of the cell.Learn More: Mitochondria use to make energy, and levels fall with age and with statin use. In a two-year trial of 420 heart failure patients, 300 mg a day cut all-cause mortality from 18 to 10 percent, and in a Swedish study of healthy adults aged 70 to 88, CoQ10 paired with selenium for four years cut cardiovascular death by 41 percent, an effect still visible 12 years later. That second trial was small and tested the combination, so treat it as promising rather than settled, and a strong fit if you’re over 70 or on a statin.

7) Vitamin D3: For Immune Balance and Cancer Defense

[vai-tuh-min dee]nounA vitamin essential for bone health and immune function.Learn More: Vitamin D acts less like a vitamin and more like a hormone, with receptors in nearly every tissue including the immune cells that decide what to attack. In VITAL, a five-year trial of nearly 26,000 adults over 50, 2,000 IU a day cut new autoimmune disease by 22 percent, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and autoimmune thyroid disease. A meta-analysis of five trials found daily vitamin D reduced cancer mortality by 13 percent, even though it didn’t lower the number of cancers diagnosed, which suggests it helps the body handle the ones that do show up.

We partnered with Nature’s Bounty because a 55-year-old brand with U.S. manufacturing, NSF-certified, independently audited facilities, and a quality lab that tests every batch for purity and potency is exactly what “boring supplements with real research” should look like.
